Northeast Ohio Rocks! Artist of the Week January 2019

For the Week of January 13, 2019

For the week of January 13, 2019 Northeast Ohio Rocks! honors Deana Ronald as Artist of the Week. Below Deana shares her story.

When I was little my mom took me to ceramic classes. I loved it and looked forward to it every week. I found my first rock about 2 years ago I hid it a few yards away then I went back and got it and joined the site and learned I could hide it anywhere. I saw so many pictures of beautiful rocks and children’s rocks so I gave it a try and found it fun and relaxing. I like to try to paint with the shape of the rock but it has to be something easy. I like to hike a lot and I love hiding and finding and my favorite is seeing the little ones finding them out in trails and smiling . It’s inspired me to paint again even some concrete critters and a large concrete deer.

For the Week of January 20, 2019

For the week of January 20, 2019 Northeast Ohio Rocks! honors Lorraine Bachman Keleman as Artist of the Week. Below Lorraine shares her story.

I've always loved arts and crafts. My grandmother taught me to knit, crochet, tat, embroider and cross stitch as a young girl, maybe 9 or 10. I started quilting in my 20's and that is my biggest passion until I found out about rock painting! My rocks vary in the different interests that I have from flowers to Mandalas. When I came across the Mandalas, I fell in love with them because of the delicate nature and the symmetry of the design, it satisfies my OCD and calms me on days when I'm stressed. I'm inspired by fellow rock painters, by nature, by the holidays and by this group. That's one thing about Northeast Ohio Rocks - it really makes people happy! My husband laughs at me because I get so excited when someone finds our rocks. I love to see the talent of others and I love to sit in the evening with my husband and have our quiet time to paint. I've only found 6 rocks, but have painted and hidden at least 300 rocks, which includes the#share100smiles. I have to say my favorite thing about Northeast Ohio Rocks is the variety of events! No matter what they are, people can always rise to the occasion! I loved the #thankavet#dcturtlerox and the rock drops for the children's hospitals - such a little expression of love on our part can make so many others happy, and that makes me happy!

Thank a Vet

Thank A Vet

World War I ended on November 11, 1918 at 11:00am. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day in 1919 with these words

“To us in America, the reflections
of Armistice Day will be filled with
solemn pride in the heroism of those
who died in the country’s service"

In 1954, President Eisenhower changed Armistice Day to Veteran's Day.

Veteran's Day is a National holiday to honor all our veteran's, living or deceased, who served our country during peace time or war. Unlike Memorial Day which honors our veteran's who have passed away.

It is important to remember what all our service members have done. Many have sacrificed their lives. All have sacrificed time away from their families to support our freedoms.

At Northeast Ohio Rocks! we celebrate Veteran's Day with a Thank a Vet Event. Members paint patriotic rocks and deliver them to their local American Legions or VFWs.

This year, we had our third annual event.

Our freedoms are not free. They are fought for and protected by men and women who are away from their families and face unimaginable dangers and hardships. We owe a debt of gratitude to these men and women.

If you are interested in Thanking a Veteran for their service, we hope that you join us in creating and sharing painted rocks. They bring smiles to people's faces.

You can visit these sites to learn how and where to share with our veterans.

Remember what others have done for you. Thank a Vet.

Note: Akron Children's Hospital has a procedure for donations. Akron Children's Hospital has asked that no rocks be hid in the hospital for the safety of their visitors and patients. Please honor their wishes so that in the future we may continue to provide rocks to children.
