How Northeast Ohio Rocks! Started

How Northeast Ohio Rocks! Started

Northeast Ohio Rocks! was inspired by Whidbey Island Rocks in Washington State. My son was stationed at Oak Harbor Washington which is on Whidbey Island. He lived there with his Wife, Mallory.

I was lucky to visit this beautiful part of our wonderful country in November 2015. Little did I know that a little over six months later I would be inspired by Whidbey Island Rocks to create Northeast Ohio Rocks. After visiting, the Pacific Northwest would change my life more than I could have ever known.

Also living in Oak Harbor are Mallory’s twin sister, Megan and her husband Jon. Jon is also stationed at Oak Harbor.

When my son was deployed to Afghanistan, the girls became involved with Whidbey Island Rocks.  Mallory suggested I start a group here in Northeast Ohio.

And, so it began.  Jeff and I talked about it and we did our homework. We looked at other groups, Whidbey Island Rocks, Port Angeles Rocks, Vancouver Rocks and others.

Some groups are art abandonment groups some are random act of kindness groups. We chose the later. Northeast Ohio Rocks! was established on July 24, 2016.  When we started Northeast Ohio Rocks! there were only two other rock painting groups in Ohio. Both very small and only one still exists. Now there are groups all over Ohio.

Follow the “Rocks” movement…

The very first community based "rocks" group was Port Angeles Rocks in Washington State. Port Angeles Rocks was started in January 2016 by Aisha Leah. Aisha and her family would take walks and collect rocks. They soon had a lot of rocks at home.  They decided to paint them.  Then, they had a lot of painted rocks at home. They began leaving painted rocks on their walks. They noticed the rocks were dissappearing. Aisha started the first community based “rocks’ group for people to post the rocks they had found. And, this is how it all began. Port Angeles Rocks is credited by many groups as being the group that started the “rocks” movement. Port Angeles Rocks has been the inspration to many to start groups in their area including Northeast Ohio Rocks! own inspiration, Whidbey Island Rocks.
